Better and better with each new novel!

I always fear that a series will not live up to an amazing first volume, however, as with her previous series, each installment of Anne Bishop’s “The Others” series delivers a wonderful story, and Marked in Flemikcoversh is no exception!

After the tragic events at the end of Visions in Silver, readers reenter the world of Namid’s creations amidst rising tension between the Others and the humans of Thaisia, where Meg and the Lakeside Courtyard hold the key to human survival.  Marked in Flesh follows Meg, Simon and their allies as they attempt to thwart the spreading influence of the Humans First and Last movement and the machinations of Nicholas Scratch.  The actions of a few humans will catch the attention of the Other’s from deep within the woods, changing the landscape of the world forever, and even Courtyards may not survive.
The world of the Others is richly detailed and wonderfully enthralling.  I can hardly wait for March each year for the newest book in the Others series.  I am in love with the residents of Lakeside courtyard and the relationships that Bishop has created in her novels.  The characters and relationships grow and develop as the story expands.  Marked in Flesh brings the story beyond the Lakeside Courtyard, introducing readers to other Cassandra Sangue and Courtyards throughout Thasia.

Wedding Cake Murder

Hannah Swensen #19

by Joanna Fluke

02 . 23 . 2016

From Goodreads:

Everyone in Lake Eden, Minnesota, may have had their doubts, but at long last, Hannah Swensen is getting married!

Hannah is thrilled to be marrying Ross Barton, her college crush. And her excitement only grows when she learns he’ll be able to join her on her trip to New York City for the Food Channel’s dessert chef contest. She’s especially nervous about facing Alain Duquesne, a celebrity chef with a nasty reputation. But before he can tear into Hannah’s layer cake, she finds him stabbed to death on the show’s kitchen set. Out of the oven, as the saying goes, and into the bright lights of Broadway, as Hannah tries to solve a mystery with more layers than a five-tiered wedding cake…

Why I am waiting…

Because she is getting MARRIED! and going to New York!

Just when the series was getting too repetative, Fluke got even more creative.  She really has done a great job with the series!

And!! For anyone who is already a fan of the series.  I just discovered the Hallmark Channel has made a movie based on the first book.  The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder is based on the first book of the Hannah Swensen Series.  The movie is playing throughout the summer on the Hallmark Channel (makes me wish I hadn’t gotten rid of cable!) Check out a trailer below!

Cast in Honor

Chronicles of Elantra #11

by Michelle Sagara

11 . 24 . 2015

From Goodreads:

In the aftermath of a vicious battle between darkness and light, the city of Elantra has emerged victorious. But Shadows continue to haunt every corner of its streets…

Elantra stands strong, but countless numbers of Hawks, the city’s staunchest protectors, were lost in the brutal attack. Humans, Barrani, Aerians, Leontines—none of the races emerged unscathed from the defense of the city. Homes were lost, families were scattered…and the outcast Barrani Lord Nightshade is missing from his castle in the fiefs.

Yet as the chaos surrounding the battle begins to wane, Private Kaylin Neya’s duties must resume, despite her grief. Called in to investigate a triple murder in a quiet part of town, Kaylin and her companions are soon embroiled in a case that is anything but routine. Evidence of the deadly Shadows that still threaten the city leads to hints of ancient, forgotten magics. And a visit to the Oracular Halls points directly to Ravellon—the heart of the Shadows and the darkness they contain.

But it is there that Lord Nightshade will be found—if he still survives.

Why I am waiting…

I am not entirely certain that I am waiting on this one…Don’t get me wrong, the series has been great, but I might be losing interest this late in the game.  I keep reading the books, hoping for a bit more romance, and then being a bit disappointed.  I will not be giving up though.  I will keep reading!  As it is, this cover looks even better than the last ones and the description sounds promising!

Cassie Palmer #7

by Karen Chance

11 . 03 . 2015

From GoodReads:

You’d think that being Chief Seer for the supernatural world would come with a few perks. But as Cassie Palmer has learned, being Pythia doesn’t mean you don’t have to do things the hard way. That’s why she finds herself on a rescue mission skipping through time—even though she doesn’t entirely understand her dimension-bending new power.

Rescuing her friend John Pritkin should have been an in and out kind of deal, but with the near-immortal mage’s soul lost in time, Cassie has to hunt for it through the ages—with Pritkin’s demon dad in tow. He’s the only one who can reverse Pritkin’s curse, but with the guardians of the time-line dead set on stopping anyone from mucking about, Cassie will have to figure out how to get her friend back without ruffling too many feathers—or causing a world-ending paradox or two…

Why I am waiting….

Now, with this book, it really does feel like I have been waiting forever!  The publication has bveen postponed once or twice.  I haven’t given up…it looks like it really will be coming out in November of this year.  This series had an interesting take on a lot of super-natural aspects, and characters: including Dracula and Merlin!  The series continues forward…and sideways with Karen Chance’s other series and short stories.  Each series is original, the characters are well developed, and the plots are well thought out. Hope you enjoy!

10 . 27 . 2015

From GoodReads:

A twist of fate…

Devon Ravenel, London’s most wickedly charming rake, has just inherited an earldom. But his powerful new rank in society comes with unwanted responsibilities . . . and more than a few surprises. His estate is saddled with debt, and the late earl’s three innocent sisters are still occupying the house . . . along with Kathleen, Lady Trenear, a beautiful young widow whose sharp wit and determination are a match for Devon’s own.

A clash of wills…

Kathleen knows better than to trust a ruthless scoundrel like Devon. But the fiery attraction between them is impossible to deny—and from the first moment Devon holds her in his arms, he vows to do whatever it takes to possess her. As Kathleen finds herself yielding to his skillfully erotic seduction, only one question remains:

Can she keep from surrendering her heart to the most dangerous man she’s ever known?

Why I am waiting…

If this new series is anywhere near as good as the last few series Kleypas wrote — than I have a whole new list of books to add to my can’t wait to read pile!  Kleypas has some sassy heroines –they always make for great reading.  I tore through her other series and look forward to starting this one!

Closer to The Heart

Herald Spy #2

by Mercedes Lackey

10 . 06 . 2015

From GoodReads:

Mags was a Herald of Valdemar. But he had once lived the brutal life of a child slave. When he was Chosen by his Companion Dallen, his young life was saved, and he slowly adjusted to being well fed, educated, and treasured as a trainee in the Herald’s Collegium at Haven. Singled out by the King’s Own Herald, Mags would thrive in his secret training as a spy. His unusually strong Gift—an ability to Mindspeak and Mindhear anyone, not just others who were Gifted—made him a perfect undercover agent for the king.

Sequel to Mercedes Lackey’s Closer to Home, this adventure continues Mags’s journey as Valdemar’s herald spy.

Why I am waiting…

Mercedes Lackey is one of my favorite authors.  I’ve reread her books so many times I have lost count.  I love that she writes all of her novels in the same universe — I hate saying goodbye to beloved characters, and this way, I don’t need to! I really enjoy that each of her main characters have slightly different gifts.  Not all of them are incredibly powerful (like Vanyel, or Mags) some (like Karal and Skiff) are just talented, compassionate, and smart.  She includes as much politics  and intrigue as adventure.  Its a great series!  October can’t come soon enough!

Queen of Shadows

Throne of Glass #4

by Sarah J. Maas

09 . 01 . 2015

From Goodreads:

Sarah J. Maas’s New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass series reaches new heights in this sweeping fourth volume.

Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she’s at last returned to the empire—for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past . . .

She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die just to see her again. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen’s triumphant return.

Celaena’s epic journey has captured the hearts and imaginations of millions across the globe. This fourth volume will hold readers rapt as Celaena’s story builds to a passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter her world.

Why I am waiting…

I have been craving a new book like this.  I haven’t found any new ones recently that I have enjoyed as much as this series.  I wanted to read a good fantasy like this enough that I reread all of the Tamora Pierce novels, the Graceling books, and Cadet of Tildor.  I was holding off rereading this series until #4 was closer to being released.  It still is not quite close enough.  Seriously though.  I am super excited for this book!

Kitty Saves the World

Kitty Norville #14

by Carrie Vaughn

08 . 04 . 2015

From Goodreads:

The final novel in the New York Times bestselling series

It’s all come down to this, following the discoveries made by Cormac in Low Midnight, Kitty and her allies are ready to strike. But, when their assassination attempt on the evil vampire Dux Bellorum fails, Kitty finds herself running out of time. The elusive vampire lord has begun his apocalyptic end game, and Kitty still doesn’t know where he will strike.

Meanwhile, pressure mounts in Denver as Kitty and her pack begin to experience the true reach of Dux Bellorum’s cult. Outnumbered and outgunned at every turn, the stakes have never been higher for Kitty. She will have to call on allies both old and new in order to save not just her family and friends, but the rest of the world as well.

Why I am Waiting…

Three words: THE. FINAL. NOVEL.

This series is really good.  I have been waiting for this ultimate showdown for a while.  So far, it hasn’t turned out quite as I expected, which is actually pretty great.  I was beginning to get bored with predicting how a series would progress.  Vaughn surprised me, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with in the finale!

Dead Ice

Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #24

by Laurell K. Hamilton

06 . 09 . 2015

From  Goodreads:

Anita Blake has the highest kill count of any vampire executioner in the country. She’s a U.S. Marshal who can raise zombies with the best of them. But ever since she and master vampire Jean-Claude went public with their engagement, all she is to anyone and everyone is Jean-Claude’s fiancée.

It’s wreaking havoc with her reputation as a hard ass—to some extent. Luckily, in professional circles, she’s still the go-to expert for zombie issues. And right now, the FBI is having one hell of a zombie issue.

Someone is producing zombie porn. Anita has seen her share of freaky undead fetishes, so this shouldn’t bother her. But the women being victimized aren’t just mindless, rotting corpses. Their souls are trapped behind their eyes, signaling voodoo of the blackest kind.

It’s the sort of case that can leave a mark on a person. And Anita’s own soul may not survive unscathed . . .

Why I am waiting…

You probably looked at the number of this volume in the series and were immediately turned off.  It is in fact, the longest series I have ever read, include Joanna Fluke’s Hannah Swenson and Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum novels.  Even though I don’t adore all of the novels, they are generall pretty good.  They make a fantastic beach read…fast-paced and fun.  They can be a little graphic, but general a good read.  These are not quite as much stand-alone novels as the Swenson and Plum novels, but they are contained enough to be read independantly.

Millworth Manor #5

by Victoria Alexander

04 . 28 . 2015

From GoodReads:

To Do:
Swim naked in the moonlight
Play in a high stakes card game
Ride an elephant
Be painted sans clothing.
Take a lover…

Lucy Merryweather has inherited a fortune—and her great-aunt’s list of unfulfilled wishes. What better way to honor her memory than by accomplishing as many of them as possible? And with Lucy’s family an ocean away in New York, nothing stands in her way—if one ignores the private investigator hired to spy on her.

Yet Cameron Effington is infuriatingly difficult to ignore…

As a reporter, Cameron is always looking for a good story. An American heiress running rampant between Millworth Manor and Mayfair is the perfect subject. Not to mention captivating. And extremely kissable. And if Lucy believes he’s a detective? Well, the truth should never get in the way of a good story—or hinder delicious, impetuous passion…

Why I am waiting…

Victoria Alexander is perhaps one of the quirkiest writers I have ever head the pleasure of reading.  Her novels bring to mind the screwball comedies of the 1930’s.  The plots can be a bit silly, and the situations just get more complicated as the novels progress.  I have to remind myself not to read them in public–I make people nervous when I crack up over a book.

Really, they are simply mahvelous dahling!  This one seems rather intriguing.  Especially the list! Some of those actually sound rather run–mostly riding an elephant.
