 Alanna: The First Adventure

Book 1 of the Song of the Lioness Quartet

By Tamora Pierce

1983

I can still remember exactly which book it was that sparked my love of reading.  I was in the fifth grade, it was Christmas morning, and I was opening my presents by the tree.  I ripped the paper off my last gift and looked down incredulously at a book.  I remember reading the cover of Alanna the First Adventure by Tamora Pierce and telling my poor mother and father that it was the worst present ever.  My parents begged me to give it a try– and I promised I would, if only to show them how much I was NOT going to like that book.  I made a great show of sitting in bed that night and grimacing as I read the first pages…and that was the first night I stayed up all night to finish a book.  How could I NOT love a book about a young, magically gifted girl who disguises her self as a boy to become a knight.  She defeats bullies, her own shortcomings, and ancient beings to protect her friend and her county. It was to me, what Harry Potter was to so many others.  My parents were thrilled I love the book…until I made them go out the next day to buy In the Hand of the Goddess, the next book in the Song of the Lioness Quartet.  Hundreds of books, thousands of dollars, and one English Major later, I wonder if they ever regret the monster they created that Christmas.

Every year, I reread that series– and all the other books by Tamora Pierce, who has been one of my favorite authors ever since.

Vacation Over

I’m back!

It’s been a while.  I have been distracted by changing jobs, planning a wedding, and getting married!  The end of 2013 was pretty crazy, and not a little bit stressful, but was pretty incredible over all.  Unfortunately, I didn’t really have a lot of time to read, so I took a brief hiatus from MJ Reads.  However, craziness over now.  I am happily married to a wonderful man and well rested after an extended honeymoon.  I can’t wait to get back to reading and writing!

See you all later this week!

And it starts….

I read too much…not that there is any such thing.  I used to work at a Borders, and I loved my job.  I find that without the bookstore to help me find new authors to read and to let me introduce others to the books that love, something is missing in my life.  So, after much delay I decided to start MJ Reads. (Partially because my fiance was tired of listening to my rants about books.) In the future I will post my thoughts on the various YA, fantasy, and romance books that I read.  Each post will include books that I find to be similar.  I would love to hear any other opinions–and especially any other books that are similar!
