Waiting on Wednesday: Mortal Heart and By Winter’s Light

WaitingOnWednesday02

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine.com, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week, I could not decide between two pre-publication “can’t-wait-to reads”–so I figured, “Why not both?”

Mortal HeartMortal Heart

His Fair Assassins

by Robin LeFevers

11 . 04 . 2014

From Goodreads:

Annith has watched her gifted sisters at the convent come and go, carrying out their dark dealings in the name of St. Mortain, patiently awaiting her own turn to serve Death. But her worst fears are realized when she discovers she is being groomed by the abbess as a Seeress, to be forever sequestered in the rock and stone womb of the convent. Feeling sorely betrayed, Annith decides to strike out on her own.

She has spent her whole life training to be an assassin. Just because the convent has changed its mind doesn’t mean she has…

Why I am waiting:

I stumbled upon the first book in this series, Grave Mercy several years ago, and I was just amazed by the concept.  So many books focused on the supernatural from the usualy perspective of vampire, witches and magic.  I thought the story behind this series was amazingly refreshing.  This takes place in historical France, and the fantastical part of this story comes from pre-Christian Gods and pagan practices and beliefs.  Also, I happen to be a huge Francophile, so anything that takes place in France is sure to catch my eye.

Its been a bit of a wait for this book, and we finally get to hear Annith’s story.  The second book of the series dragged a bit, but I am still excited for this next installment.  The intrigue in the French court has been building, as the precarious situation of the young ruler has become more and more tenuous.  I have a feeling that they saved the best for last!

And the BONUS “can’t-wait-to-read” pick is:

BY WINTER”S LIGHTBy Winter's Light

Cynster #21

by Stephanie Laurens

11 . 02 . 14

From GoodReads.com

#1 New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens returns to romantic Scotland to usher in a new generation of Cynsters in an enchanting tale of mistletoe, magic, and love.

It’s December 1837, and the young adults of the Cynster clan have succeeded in having the family Christmas celebration held at snow-bound Casphairn Manor, Richard and Catriona Cynster’s home. Led by Sebastian, Marquess of Earith, and by Lucilla, future Lady of the Vale, and her twin brother, Marcus, the upcoming generation has their own plans for the holiday season.

Yet where Cynsters gather, love is never far behind—the festive occasion brings together Daniel Crosbie, tutor to Lucifer Cynster’s sons, and Claire Meadows, widow and governess to Gabriel Cynster’s daughter. Daniel and Claire have met before and the embers of an unexpected passion smolder between them, but once bitten, twice shy, Claire believes a second marriage is not in her stars. Daniel, however, is determined to press his suit. He’s seen the love the Cynsters share, and Claire is the lady with whom he dreams of sharing his life. Assisted by a bevy of Cynsters—innate matchmakers every one—Daniel strives to persuade Claire that trusting him with her hand and her heart is her right path to happiness.

Meanwhile, out riding on Christmas Eve, the young adults of the Cynster clan respond to a plea for help. Summoned to a humble dwelling in ruggedly forested mountains, Lucilla is called on to help with the difficult birth of a child, while the others rise to the challenge of helping her. With a violent storm closing in and severely limited options, the next generation of Cynsters face their first collective test—can they save this mother and child? And themselves, too?

Back at the manor, Claire is increasingly drawn to Daniel and despite her misgivings, against the backdrop of the ongoing festivities their relationship deepens. Yet she remains torn—until catastrophe strikes, and by winter’s light, she learns that love—true love—is worth any risk, any price.

A tale brimming with all the magical delights of a Scottish festive season.

Why I am waiting:

It feels like it has been FOREVER since there has been a new Cynster novel… As you can see above, there are A LOT of them.  And while the original 6 were definitely my favorites in the series, the following books were fun as well.  I love that Laurens keeps bringing the original characters back.  These books are always, quick, fun, emotional, and sweet reads.  I am ridiculously excited for one about Christmas in Scotland. It will be the perfect start to the Winter season!

Never Judge a Lady by Her Cover

The Rules of Scoundrels #$

by Sarah MacLean

11 . 25 . 2014

From Goodreads:

She is the most powerful woman in Britain,
A queen of the London Underworld …
But no one can ever know.

He is the only man smart enough to uncover the truth,
Putting all she has at risk . . .
Including her heart.

The fourth book in New York Times bestselling author Sarah MacLean’s incredible Rule of Scoundrels/Fallen Angels series. These four dark heroes will steal the hearts of their heroines and the readers alike! This is the last in the Rules of Scoundrels series—Chase’s story

By day, she is Lady Georgiana, sister to a Duke, ruined before her first season in the worst kind of scandal. But the truth is far more shocking—in London’s darkest corners, she is Chase, the mysterious, unknown founder of the city’s most legendary gaming hell. For years, her double identity has gone undiscovered . . . until now.

Brilliant, driven, handsome-as-sin Duncan West is intrigued by the beautiful, ruined woman who is somehow connected to a world of darkness and sin. He knows she is more than she seems and he vows to uncover all of Georgiana’s secrets, laying bare her past, threatening her present, and risking all she holds dear . . . including her heart

Why I am waiting…

I have enjoyed this series from the beginning.  Maclean tells a funny, sexy, and dramatic tale.  I love it!

It was revealed that this character Chase is actually a woman, and not a man as you we led to believe.  I cannot say how much I love that the “scoundrel” roll has been given to a woman.  So many of these books paint the  women as innocent, but spirited enough to match the men they love.

I am really excited to finally have the roles reversed! I can’t wait for November!

The House of the Four Winds

Book One of One Dozen Daughters

by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory

08 . 05 . 14

From GoodReads.com

The rulers of tiny, impoverished Swansgaard have twelve daughters and one son. While the prince’s future is assured, his twelve sisters must find their own fortunes.

Disguising herself as Clarence, a sailor, Princess Clarice intends to work her way to the New World. When the crew rebels, Clarice/Clarence, an expert with rapier and dagger, sides with the handsome navigator, Dominick, and kills the cruel captain.

Dominick leads the now-outlawed crew in search of treasure in the secret pirate haven known as The House of Four Winds. They encounter the sorceress Shamal, who claims Dominick for her own—but Clarice has fallen hard for Dominick and won’t give him up without a fight.

Full of swashbuckling adventure, buoyant magic, and irrepressible charm, The House of the Four Winds is a lighthearted fantasy romp by a pair of bestselling writers.

Why I am waiting…

Honestly, I wasn’t waiting on this until about 10 minutes ago.  I had NO idea that this novel was coming out.  Mercedes Lackey is one of my favorite authors.  I love her Valdemar series the most, but all of her other series have been really awesome as well.  I am reading her newest book “Blood Red” right .  It is fanfantastic! The description for this new novel sounds incredible though..who doesn’t love a combination of princess, pirates, and swashbuckling.

I haven’t read anything by James Mallory yet, but I am looking forward to finding a new author!

If you like fantasy with a bit of romance, you need to read Mercesdes Lackey!

Ruin and Rising

The Grisha Trilogy; Book 3

by Leigh Bardugo

06 . 17 . 14

From Amazom:

The capital has fallen. The Darkling rules Ravka from his shadow throne.
Now the nation’s fate rests with a broken Sun Summoner, a disgraced tracker, and the shattered remnants of a once-great magical army.
Deep in an ancient network of tunnels and caverns, a weakened Alina must submit to the dubious protection of the Apparat and the zealots who worship her as a Saint. Yet her plans lie elsewhere, with the hunt for the elusive firebird and the hope that an outlaw prince still survives.
Alina will have to forge new alliances and put aside old rivalries as she and Mal race to find the last of Morozova’s amplifiers. But as she begins to unravel the Darkling’s secrets, she reveals a past that will forever alter her understanding of the bond they share and the power she wields. The firebird is the one thing that stands between Ravka and destruction—and claiming it could cost Alina the very future she’s fighting for.
Ruin and Rising is the thrilling final installment in Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha Trilogy.
Why I am waiting…
The first time that I read Leigh Bardugo, I was killing some time between appointments in a Barnes and Noble. I picked up Shadow and Bone, and instantly, I was enthralled in Bardugo’s story–so much so that even after the appointment I was waiting on cancelled, I stayed in the cafe to finish the book. Then I bought it because I knew I would want to read it again later.  Its not surprising that this series has become so popular, or that Leigh Bardugo is now a New York Times Bestselling Author.
I think that this is a very interesting series.  (Once again, I am bemoaning that fact that I was born too early–I love all the fantasy, especially the YA Fantasy novels, that have come out in the last few years.  Its so much more popular now! ) Anyways…the characters were engaging, the plot is an original twist on the standard fantasy plots, and I really enjoyed the writing.  To top it off, the cover art is fantastic–it is spot on for the style of the novel.  I cannot wait until this next installment comes out!!
Hope you enjoy the recommendation!

The Mortal Instruments: Book Six

by Cassandra Clare

05 . 27 . 14

From Amazon:

Clare

Shadowhunters and demons square off for the final showdown in the spellbinding, seductive conclusion to the #1 New York Timesbestselling Mortal Instruments series.

Darkness has descended on the Shadowhunter world. Chaos and destruction overwhelm the Nephilim as Clary, Jace, Simon, and their friends band together to fight the greatest evil they have ever faced: Clary’s own brother. Nothing in this world can defeat Sebastian—but if they journey to the realm of demons, they just might have a chance…

Lives will be lost, love sacrificed, and the whole world will change. Who will survive the explosive sixth and final installment of the Mortal Instruments series?

Why I am waiting:

I started this series after watching the movie that came out.  I thought the movie was okay, and figured that since the book is usually better, I should give it a try.  It took me a little bit of time to get into Clare’s writing style, but once I did, I really enjoyed the book.  I thought that the premise for the novels was really interesting, and I kinda liked that Clary was a little nerdy.  I tore through the series, and simply want to see how it is going to end.

What are you waiting on….?

Ps. This is a super short post for 2 reasons: 1) I had work from 5AM until 2PM and then read Murder of Crows by Anne Bishop (which was awesome, so being super tired is well worth it), and 2) One of my cats, Hazy, has decided that he can climb my wall to wall book shelves and is currently hanging off of them pulling books off one by one, because sometimes he likes to be a jerk.

11 . 04 . 14

From Amazon:

In the powerful conclusion to Robin LaFever’s New York Times bestselling His Fair Assassins trilogy, Annith has watched her gifted sisters at the convent come and go, carrying out their dark dealings in the name of St. Mortain, patiently awaiting her own turn to serve Death. Also in this series:
   grave mercy      Dark Triumph

Why I am waiting:
This series is a really fantastic combination of history, magic, and powerful heroines.  What more could you need?  It takes place around the 1400 in what is now France.  LaFevers writes beautifully, and the plots in the first two books were marvelous.  Not too simple, not overly complicated.  Well thought out, well executed and SUCH a GREAT read.  I really cannot wait all the way till  November!

Shadow Grail #4

by Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edgehill

04 . 22 . 2014

Why I am waiting:

I picked up this series because I really enjoy Mercedes Lackey as a writer.  I have read more than 50 of her books and enjoyed them all!  Unlike most of her other books, this is a YA series.  To get an idea of the series you would have to picture Mists of Avalon meets Harry Potter and Kelley Armstrong’s Darkest Powers series.  So, if you like the King Author mythos and enjoy stories about schools for magically gifted teens you will really enjoy this one!  I thought that this series was incredibly original (though it did remind me a little bit of Avalon High).  I love the characters and cannot wait to see how the story ends.  I just finished reading Sacrifices, Shadow Grail #3–it had been sitting on my shelf for so long, but I just kept putting it off because I knew once I finished it I would be anxious for the next book in the series.

Again, I didn’t post the synopsis because there are some serious spoilers. So,  here is the synopsis from Legacies, Shadow Grail #1.

From GoodReads:

Legacies  Who—or what—is stalking the students at Oakhurst Academy?

In the wake of the accident that killed her family, Spirit White is spirited away to Oakhurst Academy, a combination school and orphanage in the middle of Montana. There she learns she is a legacy—not only to the school, which her parents also attended, but to magic.

All the students at Oakhurst have magical powers, and although Spirit’s hasn’t manifested itself yet, the administrators insist she has one. Spirit isn’t sure she cares. Devastated by the loss of her family, she finds comfort with a group of friends: Burke Hallows, Lachlann Spears, Muirin Shae, and Adelaide Lake.

But something strange is going on at Oakhurst. Students start disappearing under mysterious circumstances, and the school seems to be trying to cover it up. Spirit and her friends must find out what’s happening—before one of them becomes the next victim…

 Alanna: The First Adventure

Book 1 of the Song of the Lioness Quartet

By Tamora Pierce

1983

I can still remember exactly which book it was that sparked my love of reading.  I was in the fifth grade, it was Christmas morning, and I was opening my presents by the tree.  I ripped the paper off my last gift and looked down incredulously at a book.  I remember reading the cover of Alanna the First Adventure by Tamora Pierce and telling my poor mother and father that it was the worst present ever.  My parents begged me to give it a try– and I promised I would, if only to show them how much I was NOT going to like that book.  I made a great show of sitting in bed that night and grimacing as I read the first pages…and that was the first night I stayed up all night to finish a book.  How could I NOT love a book about a young, magically gifted girl who disguises her self as a boy to become a knight.  She defeats bullies, her own shortcomings, and ancient beings to protect her friend and her county. It was to me, what Harry Potter was to so many others.  My parents were thrilled I love the book…until I made them go out the next day to buy In the Hand of the Goddess, the next book in the Song of the Lioness Quartet.  Hundreds of books, thousands of dollars, and one English Major later, I wonder if they ever regret the monster they created that Christmas.

Every year, I reread that series– and all the other books by Tamora Pierce, who has been one of my favorite authors ever since.

In The Fiery Heart, Sydney risked everything to follow her gut, walking a dangerous line to keep her feelings hidden from the Alchemists.

Now in the aftermath of an event that ripped their world apart, Sydney and Adrian struggle to pick up the pieces and find their way back to each other. But first, they have to survive.

Their worst fears now a chilling reality, Sydney and Adrian face their darkest hour in this heart-pounding fifth installment in theNew York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where all bets are off.

Why I Am Waiting:

The Fiery Heart had an awesome cliff hanger ending, and I NEED to find out what happens.  I am super excited about this next part of the series; I wish it were not more than 5 months away!  For those of you who have read and loved the Vampire Academy series or Mead’s lesser-known,  Georgia Kincaid  series, I am sure that you understand.

I usually try to focus on books that are coming out in the next month or two.  However, I made an exception for this one because 1) I am so excited and 2) the Vampire Academy film is going to be released in 2 days.  It took some convincing, but my husband has agreed to make it part of our Valentine’s Day outing–because he is awesome.  Anyways: you can find the trailer below!

A Meredith Gentry Novel

By Laurell K. Hamilton

06 . 03 . 14

Usually, I would post a synopsis of this book that is about to come out.  However, since this was and is such an AMAZING series–I am not going to ruin it for anyone by posting about what will happen in this latest book.  I will put the synopsis from the first up though!

I started reading this series in 2012, after the Borders Bookstore that I worked in closed and I ended up buying carts and carts of books at 90% off.  I had been looking at this series for awhile, but hadn’t gotten to them.  I started the first book, A Kiss of Shadows and could NOT put the series down.  I had thought that it was over, until I stumbled across this one on Amazon last week.  I am so excited. I really enjoyed Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series (more so in the beginning before it she went over the top with the sex scenes) and this series is just as good, possibly better (and shorter).  While this series, like the Anita Blake series, is about the paranormal interacting with our modern day world, instead of vampires, werewolves, and zombies, the Meredith Gentry novels focus on Faerie and the fae.  The writing is quick and witty, the action is tense, and the romance is swoon worthy.  I can’t wait to read this book, and am probably going to re-read all the others to hold me over until A Shiver of Light is released.

A Kiss of Shadows

A Kiss of Shadows
