Wedding Cake Murder

Hannah Swensen #19

by Joanna Fluke

02 . 23 . 2016

From Goodreads:

Everyone in Lake Eden, Minnesota, may have had their doubts, but at long last, Hannah Swensen is getting married!

Hannah is thrilled to be marrying Ross Barton, her college crush. And her excitement only grows when she learns he’ll be able to join her on her trip to New York City for the Food Channel’s dessert chef contest. She’s especially nervous about facing Alain Duquesne, a celebrity chef with a nasty reputation. But before he can tear into Hannah’s layer cake, she finds him stabbed to death on the show’s kitchen set. Out of the oven, as the saying goes, and into the bright lights of Broadway, as Hannah tries to solve a mystery with more layers than a five-tiered wedding cake…

Why I am waiting…

Because she is getting MARRIED! and going to New York!

Just when the series was getting too repetative, Fluke got even more creative.  She really has done a great job with the series!

And!! For anyone who is already a fan of the series.  I just discovered the Hallmark Channel has made a movie based on the first book.  The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder is based on the first book of the Hannah Swensen Series.  The movie is playing throughout the summer on the Hallmark Channel (makes me wish I hadn’t gotten rid of cable!) Check out a trailer below!

Cast in Honor

Chronicles of Elantra #11

by Michelle Sagara

11 . 24 . 2015

From Goodreads:

In the aftermath of a vicious battle between darkness and light, the city of Elantra has emerged victorious. But Shadows continue to haunt every corner of its streets…

Elantra stands strong, but countless numbers of Hawks, the city’s staunchest protectors, were lost in the brutal attack. Humans, Barrani, Aerians, Leontines—none of the races emerged unscathed from the defense of the city. Homes were lost, families were scattered…and the outcast Barrani Lord Nightshade is missing from his castle in the fiefs.

Yet as the chaos surrounding the battle begins to wane, Private Kaylin Neya’s duties must resume, despite her grief. Called in to investigate a triple murder in a quiet part of town, Kaylin and her companions are soon embroiled in a case that is anything but routine. Evidence of the deadly Shadows that still threaten the city leads to hints of ancient, forgotten magics. And a visit to the Oracular Halls points directly to Ravellon—the heart of the Shadows and the darkness they contain.

But it is there that Lord Nightshade will be found—if he still survives.

Why I am waiting…

I am not entirely certain that I am waiting on this one…Don’t get me wrong, the series has been great, but I might be losing interest this late in the game.  I keep reading the books, hoping for a bit more romance, and then being a bit disappointed.  I will not be giving up though.  I will keep reading!  As it is, this cover looks even better than the last ones and the description sounds promising!

Cassie Palmer #7

by Karen Chance

11 . 03 . 2015

From GoodReads:

You’d think that being Chief Seer for the supernatural world would come with a few perks. But as Cassie Palmer has learned, being Pythia doesn’t mean you don’t have to do things the hard way. That’s why she finds herself on a rescue mission skipping through time—even though she doesn’t entirely understand her dimension-bending new power.

Rescuing her friend John Pritkin should have been an in and out kind of deal, but with the near-immortal mage’s soul lost in time, Cassie has to hunt for it through the ages—with Pritkin’s demon dad in tow. He’s the only one who can reverse Pritkin’s curse, but with the guardians of the time-line dead set on stopping anyone from mucking about, Cassie will have to figure out how to get her friend back without ruffling too many feathers—or causing a world-ending paradox or two…

Why I am waiting….

Now, with this book, it really does feel like I have been waiting forever!  The publication has bveen postponed once or twice.  I haven’t given up…it looks like it really will be coming out in November of this year.  This series had an interesting take on a lot of super-natural aspects, and characters: including Dracula and Merlin!  The series continues forward…and sideways with Karen Chance’s other series and short stories.  Each series is original, the characters are well developed, and the plots are well thought out. Hope you enjoy!

New Series????

by Lisa Kleypas

10 . 27 . 2015

From GoodReads:

A twist of fate…

Devon Ravenel, London’s most wickedly charming rake, has just inherited an earldom. But his powerful new rank in society comes with unwanted responsibilities . . . and more than a few surprises. His estate is saddled with debt, and the late earl’s three innocent sisters are still occupying the house . . . along with Kathleen, Lady Trenear, a beautiful young widow whose sharp wit and determination are a match for Devon’s own.

A clash of wills…

Kathleen knows better than to trust a ruthless scoundrel like Devon. But the fiery attraction between them is impossible to deny—and from the first moment Devon holds her in his arms, he vows to do whatever it takes to possess her. As Kathleen finds herself yielding to his skillfully erotic seduction, only one question remains:

Can she keep from surrendering her heart to the most dangerous man she’s ever known?

Why I am waiting…

If this new series is anywhere near as good as the last few series Kleypas wrote — than I have a whole new list of books to add to my can’t wait to read pile!  Kleypas has some sassy heroines –they always make for great reading.  I tore through her other series and look forward to starting this one!

Closer to The Heart

Herald Spy #2

by Mercedes Lackey

10 . 06 . 2015

From GoodReads:

Mags was a Herald of Valdemar. But he had once lived the brutal life of a child slave. When he was Chosen by his Companion Dallen, his young life was saved, and he slowly adjusted to being well fed, educated, and treasured as a trainee in the Herald’s Collegium at Haven. Singled out by the King’s Own Herald, Mags would thrive in his secret training as a spy. His unusually strong Gift—an ability to Mindspeak and Mindhear anyone, not just others who were Gifted—made him a perfect undercover agent for the king.

Sequel to Mercedes Lackey’s Closer to Home, this adventure continues Mags’s journey as Valdemar’s herald spy.

Why I am waiting…

Mercedes Lackey is one of my favorite authors.  I’ve reread her books so many times I have lost count.  I love that she writes all of her novels in the same universe — I hate saying goodbye to beloved characters, and this way, I don’t need to! I really enjoy that each of her main characters have slightly different gifts.  Not all of them are incredibly powerful (like Vanyel, or Mags) some (like Karal and Skiff) are just talented, compassionate, and smart.  She includes as much politics  and intrigue as adventure.  Its a great series!  October can’t come soon enough!

Waiting on Wednesday: Mortal Heart and By Winter’s Light

WaitingOnWednesday02

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine.com, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week, I could not decide between two pre-publication “can’t-wait-to reads”–so I figured, “Why not both?”

Mortal HeartMortal Heart

His Fair Assassins

by Robin LeFevers

11 . 04 . 2014

From Goodreads:

Annith has watched her gifted sisters at the convent come and go, carrying out their dark dealings in the name of St. Mortain, patiently awaiting her own turn to serve Death. But her worst fears are realized when she discovers she is being groomed by the abbess as a Seeress, to be forever sequestered in the rock and stone womb of the convent. Feeling sorely betrayed, Annith decides to strike out on her own.

She has spent her whole life training to be an assassin. Just because the convent has changed its mind doesn’t mean she has…

Why I am waiting:

I stumbled upon the first book in this series, Grave Mercy several years ago, and I was just amazed by the concept.  So many books focused on the supernatural from the usualy perspective of vampire, witches and magic.  I thought the story behind this series was amazingly refreshing.  This takes place in historical France, and the fantastical part of this story comes from pre-Christian Gods and pagan practices and beliefs.  Also, I happen to be a huge Francophile, so anything that takes place in France is sure to catch my eye.

Its been a bit of a wait for this book, and we finally get to hear Annith’s story.  The second book of the series dragged a bit, but I am still excited for this next installment.  The intrigue in the French court has been building, as the precarious situation of the young ruler has become more and more tenuous.  I have a feeling that they saved the best for last!

BY WINTER”S LIGHTBy Winter's Light

Cynster #21

by Stephanie Laurens

11 . 02 . 14

From GoodReads.com

#1 New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens returns to romantic Scotland to usher in a new generation of Cynsters in an enchanting tale of mistletoe, magic, and love.

It’s December 1837, and the young adults of the Cynster clan have succeeded in having the family Christmas celebration held at snow-bound Casphairn Manor, Richard and Catriona Cynster’s home. Led by Sebastian, Marquess of Earith, and by Lucilla, future Lady of the Vale, and her twin brother, Marcus, the upcoming generation has their own plans for the holiday season.

Yet where Cynsters gather, love is never far behind—the festive occasion brings together Daniel Crosbie, tutor to Lucifer Cynster’s sons, and Claire Meadows, widow and governess to Gabriel Cynster’s daughter. Daniel and Claire have met before and the embers of an unexpected passion smolder between them, but once bitten, twice shy, Claire believes a second marriage is not in her stars. Daniel, however, is determined to press his suit. He’s seen the love the Cynsters share, and Claire is the lady with whom he dreams of sharing his life. Assisted by a bevy of Cynsters—innate matchmakers every one—Daniel strives to persuade Claire that trusting him with her hand and her heart is her right path to happiness.

Meanwhile, out riding on Christmas Eve, the young adults of the Cynster clan respond to a plea for help. Summoned to a humble dwelling in ruggedly forested mountains, Lucilla is called on to help with the difficult birth of a child, while the others rise to the challenge of helping her. With a violent storm closing in and severely limited options, the next generation of Cynsters face their first collective test—can they save this mother and child? And themselves, too?

Back at the manor, Claire is increasingly drawn to Daniel and despite her misgivings, against the backdrop of the ongoing festivities their relationship deepens. Yet she remains torn—until catastrophe strikes, and by winter’s light, she learns that love—true love—is worth any risk, any price.

A tale brimming with all the magical delights of a Scottish festive season.

Why I am waiting:

It feels like it has been FOREVER since there has been a new Cynster novel… As you can see above, there are A LOT of them.  And while the original 6 were definitely my favorites in the series, the following books were fun as well.  I love that Laurens keeps bringing the original characters back.  These books are always, quick, fun, emotional, and sweet reads.  I am ridiculously excited for one about Christmas in Scotland. It will be the perfect start to the Winter season!

Never Judge a Lady by Her Cover

The Rules of Scoundrels #$

by Sarah MacLean

11 . 25 . 2014

From Goodreads:

She is the most powerful woman in Britain,
A queen of the London Underworld …
But no one can ever know.

He is the only man smart enough to uncover the truth,
Putting all she has at risk . . .
Including her heart.

The fourth book in New York Times bestselling author Sarah MacLean’s incredible Rule of Scoundrels/Fallen Angels series. These four dark heroes will steal the hearts of their heroines and the readers alike! This is the last in the Rules of Scoundrels series—Chase’s story

By day, she is Lady Georgiana, sister to a Duke, ruined before her first season in the worst kind of scandal. But the truth is far more shocking—in London’s darkest corners, she is Chase, the mysterious, unknown founder of the city’s most legendary gaming hell. For years, her double identity has gone undiscovered . . . until now.

Brilliant, driven, handsome-as-sin Duncan West is intrigued by the beautiful, ruined woman who is somehow connected to a world of darkness and sin. He knows she is more than she seems and he vows to uncover all of Georgiana’s secrets, laying bare her past, threatening her present, and risking all she holds dear . . . including her heart

Why I am waiting…

I have enjoyed this series from the beginning.  Maclean tells a funny, sexy, and dramatic tale.  I love it!

It was revealed that this character Chase is actually a woman, and not a man as you we led to believe.  I cannot say how much I love that the “scoundrel” roll has been given to a woman.  So many of these books paint the  women as innocent, but spirited enough to match the men they love.

I am really excited to finally have the roles reversed! I can’t wait for November!

The House of the Four Winds

Book One of One Dozen Daughters

by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory

08 . 05 . 14

From GoodReads.com

The rulers of tiny, impoverished Swansgaard have twelve daughters and one son. While the prince’s future is assured, his twelve sisters must find their own fortunes.

Disguising herself as Clarence, a sailor, Princess Clarice intends to work her way to the New World. When the crew rebels, Clarice/Clarence, an expert with rapier and dagger, sides with the handsome navigator, Dominick, and kills the cruel captain.

Dominick leads the now-outlawed crew in search of treasure in the secret pirate haven known as The House of Four Winds. They encounter the sorceress Shamal, who claims Dominick for her own—but Clarice has fallen hard for Dominick and won’t give him up without a fight.

Full of swashbuckling adventure, buoyant magic, and irrepressible charm, The House of the Four Winds is a lighthearted fantasy romp by a pair of bestselling writers.

Why I am waiting…

Honestly, I wasn’t waiting on this until about 10 minutes ago.  I had NO idea that this novel was coming out.  Mercedes Lackey is one of my favorite authors.  I love her Valdemar series the most, but all of her other series have been really awesome as well.  I am reading her newest book “Blood Red” right .  It is fanfantastic! The description for this new novel sounds incredible though..who doesn’t love a combination of princess, pirates, and swashbuckling.

I haven’t read anything by James Mallory yet, but I am looking forward to finding a new author!

If you like fantasy with a bit of romance, you need to read Mercesdes Lackey!

Blood Magick

Book 3 of the Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy

by Nora Roberts

10 . 28 . 14

From Berkley Publishing:

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts comes a trilogy about the land we’re drawn to, the family we learn to cherish, and the people we long to love…

Book Three of The Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy
Blood Magick

County Mayo is rich in the traditions of Ireland, legends that Branna O’Dwyer fully embraces in her life and in her work as the proprietor of The Dark Witch shop, which carries soaps, lotions, and candles for tourists, made with Branna’s special touch.

Branna’s strength and selflessness hold together a close circle of friends and family—along with their horses and hawks and her beloved hound. But there’s a single missing link in the chain of her life: love…

She had it once—for a moment—with Finbar Burke, but a shared future is forbidden by history and blood. Which is why Fin has spent his life traveling the world to fill the abyss left in him by Branna, focusing on work rather than passion.

Branna and Fin’s relationship offers them both comfort and torment. And though they succumb to the heat between them, there can be no promises for tomorrow. A storm of shadows threatens everything that their circle holds dear. It will be Fin’s power, loyalty, and heart that will make all the difference in an age-old battle between the bonds that hold their friends together and the evil that has haunted their families for centuries.

Don’t miss the first two books in the Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy
Dark Witch
and
Shadow Spell

Why I am waiting…

I have been waiting on this installment of the Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy since reading the first book!  I cannot wait to read more about Branna and Fin.  I have never read Nora Roberts’ books before, but I enjoyed Dark Witch  more than I thought I would…Ireland, magic, romance, and ancienct battles…what is not to love!

I have always loved books about magic and Ireland — I think that the first one I read was Daughter of the Forest by Julliet Marillier.  The Cousins O’Dwyer trilogy reminds me, in part of Daughter of the Forest and other books by Julliet Marillier.

I would definitely recommend BOTH of these series.

Ruin and Rising

The Grisha Trilogy; Book 3

by Leigh Bardugo

06 . 17 . 14

From Amazom:

The capital has fallen. The Darkling rules Ravka from his shadow throne.
Now the nation’s fate rests with a broken Sun Summoner, a disgraced tracker, and the shattered remnants of a once-great magical army.
Deep in an ancient network of tunnels and caverns, a weakened Alina must submit to the dubious protection of the Apparat and the zealots who worship her as a Saint. Yet her plans lie elsewhere, with the hunt for the elusive firebird and the hope that an outlaw prince still survives.
Alina will have to forge new alliances and put aside old rivalries as she and Mal race to find the last of Morozova’s amplifiers. But as she begins to unravel the Darkling’s secrets, she reveals a past that will forever alter her understanding of the bond they share and the power she wields. The firebird is the one thing that stands between Ravka and destruction—and claiming it could cost Alina the very future she’s fighting for.
Ruin and Rising is the thrilling final installment in Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha Trilogy.
Why I am waiting…
The first time that I read Leigh Bardugo, I was killing some time between appointments in a Barnes and Noble. I picked up Shadow and Bone, and instantly, I was enthralled in Bardugo’s story–so much so that even after the appointment I was waiting on cancelled, I stayed in the cafe to finish the book. Then I bought it because I knew I would want to read it again later.  Its not surprising that this series has become so popular, or that Leigh Bardugo is now a New York Times Bestselling Author.
I think that this is a very interesting series.  (Once again, I am bemoaning that fact that I was born too early–I love all the fantasy, especially the YA Fantasy novels, that have come out in the last few years.  Its so much more popular now! ) Anyways…the characters were engaging, the plot is an original twist on the standard fantasy plots, and I really enjoyed the writing.  To top it off, the cover art is fantastic–it is spot on for the style of the novel.  I cannot wait until this next installment comes out!!
Hope you enjoy the recommendation!
What are you waiting on…?
